Réunion is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. This volcanic island features the active Piton de la Fournaise volcano and dramatic black sand beaches. Visitors hike the volcanic terrain, explore the multicultural creole culture, sample local cuisine, and enjoy water sports along the coast.
Reunion is a French overseas department and integral part of the European Union located in the southwestern Indian Ocean, approximately 700 kilometres east of Madagascar and 180 kilometres southwest of Mauritius. Its interior, comprising three ancient calderas and an active shield volcano, is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the designation Pitons, Cirques and Remparts of Reunion Island. The island's population of approximately 900,000 reflects centuries of migration from Africa, India, China, and metropolitan France, producing a Creole culture that permeates its cuisine, architecture, and festivals.
