          More to know about Kleifarvatn

Kleifarvatn is a volcanic crater lake in southwestern Iceland, located about 30 kilometers from Reykjavik in the geothermal region of the Reykjanes Peninsula. The lake formed after a major eruption and is surrounded by dark lava fields and moss-covered terrain. Visitors hike around the crater rim, photograph the stark volcanic landscape, and observe geothermal features including steam vents and hot springs nearby.
Kleifarvatn is located within the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark in southwestern Iceland, approximately 30 kilometres south of Reykjavik. It is the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula and occupies an active volcanic rift zone where geothermal features, tectonic fissures, and lava fields characterise the surrounding terrain. The lake's water level is known to fluctuate following seismic events, as underground fissures can drain water into subsurface geological formations, a phenomenon recorded after the 2000 South Iceland earthquake sequence.
