Marathonisi

Marathonisi is a small uninhabited islet situated within Laganas Bay on the southern coast of Zakynthos (Zante), one of the Ionian Islands of western Greece. It falls entirely within the boundaries of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, established in 1999 to protect critical nesting habitat for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The islet is referenced in ecological literature as one of the most significant Mediterranean nesting sites for this species, and all visitor activity within the park is governed by Hellenic wildlife and environmental protection legislation.
