More to know about Dion
Dion is an ancient archaeological site in the Pieria region of northern Greece, located at the foot of Mount Olympus. The site features well-preserved ruins of temples, theaters, and mosaics dating from classical and Roman periods. Visitors explore the sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, examine marble sculptures in the museum, and walk among remnants of a once-thriving city.
Dion is located in the Pieria regional unit of Central Macedonia, northern Greece, approximately 85 kilometers southwest of Thessaloniki. The site sits on a low-lying plain between Mount Olympus and the Thermaic Gulf, within the municipality of Dion-Olympos. Archaeological excavations, led by the University of Thessaloniki since the 1920s and expanded from the 1970s onward, have uncovered sanctuaries, civic buildings, baths, and a theater spanning the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. The site and its associated museum are managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports.
