Caen

Caen is the prefecture of the Calvados department in the Normandy region of northern France, situated approximately 15 kilometres from the English Channel coast along the Orne River and its associated canal. The city served as a major Norman power centre from the 11th century under William the Conqueror and was severely damaged during the Battle of Normandy in the summer of 1944. Today it functions as the primary gateway city for visitors to the D-Day landing beaches and broader Battle of Normandy sites, supported by strong rail connections to Paris and a well-developed heritage tourism infrastructure.
