More to know about Gobekli Tepe

Göbekli Tepe is an ancient archaeological site located in southeastern Turkey near the Syrian border. Dating to around 9500 BCE, it features the world's oldest known temple structures with T-shaped stone pillars arranged in circular enclosures. The site predates pottery and agriculture, offering crucial insights into early human spirituality and social organization through systematic excavation and study.
Gobekli Tepe is located approximately 15 kilometres northeast of Sanliurfa in Turkey's Southeastern Anatolia Region, at an elevation of roughly 760 metres on a limestone ridge overlooking the Harran Plain. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, it is managed by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The site has been under systematic excavation since 1994, led initially by the late German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt and continued by Turkish institutions. Content in this guide reflects publicly available archaeological literature, site interpretation materials, and regional travel information current to 2025.
