Kleifarvatn ist ein vulkanischer Krattersee im Südwesten Islands, etwa 30 Kilometer von Reykjavik entfernt in der geothermischen Region der Reykjanes-Halbinsel. Kleifarvatn is located within the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark in southwestern Iceland, approximately 30 kilometres south of Reykjavik. It is the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula and occupies an active volcanic rift zone where geothermal features, tectonic fissures, and lava fields characterise the surrounding terrain. The lake's water level is known to fluctuate following seismic events, as underground fissures can drain water into subsurface geological formations, a phenomenon recorded after the 2000 South Iceland earthquake sequence.
